Our staff and students must maintain the highest professional standards as they conduct their research. We put policies and procedures in place to protect the quality of research at City.
For information and advice (formal and informal) regarding research integrity matters please contact Annah Whyton, Research Governance, Ethics, and Integrity Manager (Research and Enterprise). For formal complaints please e-mail the Vice-President (Research), Professor Leanne Aitken.
We support our staff and students
We give advice to help them achieve research integrity, using:
- Our Framework for Good Practice in Research
- Our Research Ethics Framework
- Research Governance, provided through our Research and Enterprise Committee. The committee is responsible for the strategic direction, development and oversight of City's research policies
- The Research Committees and Research Ethics Committees of each of City's Schools
- City's policies and guidance that relate to research, particularly those connected with Intellectual Property, Data Protection and Information Compliance.
We report each year on research integrity
City, University of London has signed up to the Concordat to Support Research Integrity, a commitment by 136 UK universities to support and embed a culture of research integrity.
As part of that commitment, we report annually to Council, City's governing body. Our report highlights good practice for the year. It also details issues, developments and enhancements relevant to the institutional governance and operational framework, in relation to research integrity.
Each report is independent of all previous years, so repeats some elements if they relate to that year.

We promote our Framework for Good Practice in Research
Our Framework for Good Practice in Research has been designed to support high quality research by defining the University's expectations of our staff and students engaged in, or supporting research activity; the Framework assists in creating and sustaining an environment of good research practice at City.
We advise on and review research ethics
City's Research Ethics Committees oversee the ethics of research investigations involving human participants and animal subjects. They cover all aspects of research carried out at City or under the auspices of City, by its Schools, staff or students.
The Research Ethics Committees advise academic staff, associated professional staff and students on compliance and policy and give (or withhold) approval for research protocols involving human participants and/or identifiable personal data.
We have a framework of delegated authority, with some local committees in schools or departments. All committees report to the Senate Research Ethics Committee.
City's Research Ethics Committees give support and advice on obtaining research ethics approval.
We encourage responsible research data management
We help researchers at City to consider their research data and everything that happens to it, before, during and after a research project. Our comprehensive online guide to research data management is part of City's commitment to supporting high quality research.
We've created research data management guidelines to ensure our researchers can easily find out how to organise, plan and reuse their data during their projects. The guidelines also help them meet the RCUK Councils' requirements for handling and storing research data and open access data.
Figshare, City's institutional research data repository, also helps our researchers to share and publish data that support their publications while complying with ethical and legal considerations.
