Korean Beginners Part 1 Course overview
Learn to communicate using simple phrases with part 1 of our beginners Korean course. Our friendly and informal classes will help you to understand the essentials and get a feel for the Korean language in just 10 weeks.
In part 1, you’ll learn basic phrases to introduce yourself, talk about your routine and identify everyday items. You’ll be introduced to the subject-object-verb sentence structure and learn about formal and informal use of verbs in present tense.
Enrol on part 1 if want to try Korean without committing to a full year of learning. If you enjoy it, you can enrol on parts 2 and 3 to complete your beginners knowledge.
If you’re planning a holiday, reconnecting with distant relatives or just a fan of Korean cinema, you’ll be conversing in basic Korean in just 10 weeks.

Assessment and certificates
There is no formal assessment or accreditation attached to this course, but you will be awarded an official City, University of London certificate. You must attend over 70 per cent of the classes to be eligible for the certificate.
Teaching
Our native-language tutors make the course fun and interactive, with an emphasis on listening and speaking the language required in authentic situations.
Classroom activities will include role-playing, pair and group work, work on pronunciation and intonation, and grammar in context.
The lessons feature the use of audio clips and videos and you’ll also learn about Korean popular culture, including music and film.
More comprehensive grammar exercises and reading texts are generally set as homework.

This is a complete beginners course and no prior knowledge is required for Korean Beginners (Part 1).
Already know some basic Korean? You may want to start on part 2 or part 3 of the Beginners Korean course.

Jaehee Cho
Jaehee Cho graduated from Korea University in Seoul with a BA in Korean language and literature education in 1987. She went on to study for an M.A. in Phonetics at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London in 1997. Her interest is in learning and teaching languages, especially the sound of languages and how to teach a language more effectively using both structural and communicative approach. Jaehee has more than 25 years of experience in teaching Korean.
She wrote some books ‘Korean Listening Skills’ for Beginners and Intermediate learners. Currently she is also teaching Korean at King’s College London and FCO Language Centre.

Hannah Giles
Hannah Giles has been teaching Korean for over 20 years. She started teaching Korean and Linguistics in 1999 at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London.
She has also been teaching British diplomats at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office since 2005 and worked as a principal examiner for IGCSE First Language Korean until 2021. She also serves as Secretary for the British Korean Society.
Hannah read Linguistics at SOAS and graduated with BA First Class Honours. She was awarded a scholarship by SOAS to continue her PhD in Linguistics until 2004.
She specialises in Korean language and culture training, applying linguistic theories to practical language teaching, as well as designing Korean courses, exams and setting course syllabi.
