Japanese Lower Intermediate Part 2 Course overview
Part 2 will cover conversational topics, such as exercise routines, places you’ve visited and foods you like. You’ll also learn how to express worry and concern, and apologise for being late.
You’ll be introduced to 50 new kanji characters, as well as new grammar topics, including passive verbs and the use of quantifiers – so you can express everyday phrases in more details.
Your tutor will use a mix of resources, such as manga comics and anime films to add variety to your learning, and offer an interesting cultural insight.
Who is it for?

Assessment and certificates
You will be awarded an official City, University of London certificate on completion of the course if you attend over 70 per cent of the classes. The course is not formally accredited.
Assessment
You won’t need to sit an exam at the end of the course, but you will be required to complete around two hours of homework each week.
Teaching
Our small class sizes mean the lessons can be shaped around the needs and progress of the group. Classes involve lots of participation and interaction, and we use role-plays and tasks to develop all the key skills required.
Audio and video clips support your learning, helping you to see how the language is used in everyday Japanese, while developing your listening and speaking skills.
Eligibility
It is the right level if one of the following applies:
- you have completed part 1 of our Japanese lower intermediate course, or equivalent elsewhere
- you have studied formally for 140 hours
- you can communicate at JLPT N5 Level.
You should already be able to:
- talk about your hobbies
- request someone to do something for you
- describe lost items at the station
- use volitional, conditional, imperative and prohibitive forms.
