Arabic Intermediate Part 1 Course overview
Part 1 of this course covers some essential topics including how to search for and rent an apartment in Arab countries, how to describe neighbourhood businesses and their locations and how to use correct forms of address.
You’ll learn about habitual and progressive past verb aspects and comparative nouns. You will also learn how to express intention, obligation and exception.
Our small and diverse classes offer multiple perspectives - and give you a more rounded learning experience.
Part 1 is the first module of the intermediate syllabus, working towards CEFR B1 level of language learning.
Who is it for?
You should already be able to communicate at CEFR A2 level of Arabic. You may have completed our lower intermediate syllabus, studied Arabic elsewhere for at least 120 hours or have a good or recent GCSE. Check the eligibility section for more information.

Timetable
This course takes place one evening a week at 18:30 for 10 weeks.

By the end of this course you will be able to

- use correct forms of address
- describe countries, populations and products
- talk about events, television and radio programmes.

Assessment and certificates
You will be awarded an official City, University of London certificate on completion of the course. You must attend over 70 per cent of the classes to be eligible for the certificate.
There is no formal assessment, but you will be expected to complete weekly homework, which can consist of grammar and comprehension exercises and reading texts.
Your tutor will monitor and evaluate your progress throughout the course, via your performance during the lesson and the homework you complete.
Teaching
All our language courses are designed to develop your skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing the language. The teaching methods we use create and engaging and interactive classroom, combining a mixture of role play, group work and discussion.
The book used on this course is Ahlan wa Sahlan: Functional Modern Standard Arabic for Beginners. This includes access to online interactive exercises.
Eligibility
It is the right level if you:
- have completed our full Arabic lower intermediate syllabus, or an equivalent course elsewhere
- can communicate at A2 level, according to the Common European Framework Reference of languages
- have approximately 120 hours of prior formal study
- or you have a good or recent GCSE.
You should already be able to:
- talk in more detail about family members and relationships
- describe geographical directions and signs
- describe professions and travel-related activities
- express uncertainty, possibility and frequency
- have some understanding of using comparative nouns.
