Awardees engaged the ceremony attendees with the panel discussion: ‘The AI Supported Knowledge Worker or The Death of Professionals?’

On Wednesday 17 September the School of Science & Technology, City St George’s, University of London, conferred awards on four of its most outstanding alumni.

Now in its third year, the City STEM Alumni Awards, recognised the achievements of:

  • Professor Chris Hankin (BSc in Computer Science, First Class Honours, 1976) who received the ‘Distinguished Academic STEM Alumni Award’ 2024
  • Mike Hudson (BSc in Systems and Management Science, 1987) who received The Distinguished Professional STEM Alumni Award, 2024
  • Philip Adzanoukpe  (MSc in Data Science, Distinction, 2020) was the runner-up for this year's Excellence in STEM Achievement Award, 2024
  • Gordon Tveito-Duncan (MSc in Data Science, Distinction, 2020) who received the Excellence in STEM Achievement Award, 2024.

During the day, awardees* were taken on a tour of the School’s current, cutting-edge lab facilities, and for lunch with City St George’s staff at the Langham Hotel.

The award ceremony took place in the evening, followed by a panel discussion with Professor Chris Hankin and Philip Adzanoukpe who were joined by Professor Amanda Goodall, Bayes Business School.

Entitled, ‘The AI Supported Knowledge Worker or The Death of Professionals?’ discussion panellists shared their views of the opportunities and threats engendered by artificial intelligence playing an ever larger role in the workplace.

They opened the discussion out to a wide range of questions from the audience.

History

The annual STEM Alumni Awards were launched in 2022 to honour alumni of the School of Science & Technology who are working to achieve positive change in their respective communities, and making an outstanding impact.

The two award categories are:

  • Distinguished STEM Alumni Award for alumni who have achieved significant success within their respective STEM discipline.
  • Excellence in STEM Achievement Alumni Award for alumni who have made significant progress in their careers within ten years of graduating from the School.

Opening the ceremony, the organisational lead of the awards this year, Dr Chris Child, said in part:

The awards give recognition to outstanding contributions of our alumni in their professional or academic careers.

City St George’s is an institution which is proud of its alumni and has a long history of producing captains of industry and leaders in their fields. These awards acknowledge just a few of those individuals and their place in City St George’s growing influence and standing.

It’s lovely to have this many people here to acknowledge the award winners and also get involved in the panel debate. I'll be chairing that debate later.

Introducing the awardees to those gathered at the ceremony, Executive Dean of the School of Science & Technology, Professor Rajkumar Roy said:

I'm delighted to see so many of you joining this programme of activity.  The numbers are growing every year, and that's fantastic news for the STEM Alumni Awards.  They have become a very important feature of the School and University in STEM subjects.
