Overview
Dr Jonatan Echebarria Fernández (FHEA) is an Honorary Lecturer at The City Law School (CLS). He previously has served as an Associate Professor of Law at the Department of Law and Governance of BI Norwegian Business School (2021-2022), where he taught the following courses at the Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA): Marine Insurance, International Maritime Law, Organising the Shipowning Entity and Shipping Management. His pedagogical competence was recognised by BI in Norway in April 2022.
He was previously employed as a Lecturer in Law at CLS (2020-2021), where he lectured the Commercial Law and Contract Law modules at the LLB programme along with Carriage of Goods by Sea and International Trade Law as a module leader at the LLM programme. He was awarded a PG Cert in Academic Practice (Technology Enabled) at City in 2022.
Dr Echebarria Fernández has previously taught Maritime Law, EU Law from a Business Perspective, International Commercial Law, and International Business Law at the Copenhagen Business School (CBS), where he was he was employed as a PhD Fellow and a Research Assistant, leading to the completion of his PhD in Law. He was awarded two LLMs (European Union Law and Shipping Law, respectively) in Spain. He has undertaken PhD courses from the Hague Academy of International Law, the University of the Basque Country, CBS, Lund University, Aarhus University and the University of Southern Denmark. He has pursued specialised courses and certificates from the Lloyd's Maritime Academy, the Cambridge Judge Business School, Columbia University, the College of Europe, the University of the Basque Country, CBS Executive and Harvard University.
Dr Echebarria Fernández's research interests span from Maritime & Commercial disputes and European Conflict of Laws to Environmental Law. He is currently working in some articles and book chapters related to the impact of marine pollution focused on least developed countries’ coastal communities. His PhD-based book titled “Jurisdiction and arbitration agreements in contracts for the carriage of goods by sea – limitations on party autonomy” will be published by Routledge in early 2021. He has delivered presentations at international conferences during the last years.
Dr Echebarria Fernández has carried out research activities at the Scandinavian Institute of Maritime Law, the University of the Basque Country, the University of Cambridge, the World Maritime University, the International Maritime Organization, the Ghent Law School, the Max Planck Institute Luxembourg for International, European and Regulatory Procedural Law, the UCD Sutherland School of Law and the University of Southampton. His research has attracted funding from different foundations such as Otto Mønsteds Fond, Professor dr. jur. Sørens mindefond, Reinholdt W. Jorck og Hustrus Fond or Oticon fonden. He was awarded the Basque Government´s Internationalisation grant in 2011 and the Claes Isacson scholarship 2016 handed over by Gard AS.
Dr Echebarria Fernández is a Spanish qualified lawyer and he has been registered as a member of the Biscay Bar Association in Spain between 2010 and 2016. His earlier professional experience includes working at the Permanent Representation of Spain to the EU (Shipping Working Party at the Council of the EU), the European Investment Bank, the Trade Office of the Spanish Embassy in Belgium and Luxembourg, the Luxembourg Maritime Administration and the Bilbao Port Authority (Spain).
