About
The Department of Media, Culture and Creative Industries was formed in summer 2022, bringing together areas of education, research and practice which were previously dispersed across the University. The new department consists of the following subject groupings:
- Culture and Creative Industries
- English, Publishing, Creative Writing
- Media and Communications.
This alignment creates new opportunities for interdisciplinary teaching and research, and fosters a thriving community of staff and students, driven by a passion for arts, media and creativity.
The Department offers cutting-edge, industry-focused and socially relevant perspectives on media, culture and the creative industries, and their place in an ever-changing world.
From novel writing and publishing, to considering the shifting nature of political communication and media representation in the age of TikTok and Netflix.
From critical exploration of twenty-first century English literature, to understanding the role of cultural policy as a force for global economic and social development.
From examining the resources and processes of information organisation and storage, to exploring their relevance to contemporary society.
These are all topics covered by our research and teaching. If you want to find out more about how Creative Writing is taught in the department, do check out the team’s collaborative Substack, Creative Digest.
Our location in central London promises an unparalleled student experience, with world-leading media and tech companies, cultural institutions, archives, libraries and creative opportunities on our doorstep.
City’s membership of the University of London also provides students and researchers with access to outstanding research resources, such as the renowned Senate House Library. The Department also benefits from being located within the School of Communication and Creativity, which includes the Department of Journalism and the Department of Performing Arts.
